"The Howard House,"
an antebellum mansion, was built in the 1850's by the Honorable Cydnor B. Thompkins, an
attorney and senator. It was originally a small, brick home.
In 1865, the mansion was
purchased by James Kelley Jones, a native of Morgan County, who had reportedly made a
great fortune in business trips to New Orleans as a young man. After returning to Morgan
County, Mr. Jones was a director of the First National Bank in McConnelsville and built
the J.K. Jones building located in McConnelsville's main street.
Mr. Jones's daughter, Hattie,
married a Mr. Howard. Their son was J.K. Howard. Hattie Jones Howard, who inherited the
"Rolling Acres" estate, was a respected, prominent woman in the community. J.K.
Howard was a director of the First National Bank. He married Hazelle McGregor Howard, and
their children were Bob, Harriet, JoAnn, and Susie. All generations of the Howard family
lived at "Rolling Acres."

The mansion was purchased in
October, 1989 by Darl and Steve Hann with a goal to restoring it to its original
grandeur. Over a nine month period, this dream became a reality. For many years most
people in the community referred to the mansion as the "Old Howard House," or
"Old Howard Property." Thus came the name of "The Howard House
Restaurant."
